Time to Consider Kettlebell Classes

Okay, they still fit but not quite like they used to.  Why would that be?  I bust my butt training several times per week!

I do work hard in the gym and I do spend a lot of time educating myself on nutrition.  But…I don’t always put that knowledge to work for myself.  I consciously decided to give myself a break after my RKC Kettlebells Level II Certification in July, 2011.  I have been training hard and watching what I eat for almost five years.  During which time I also had a baby.  Mentally, I knew I just needed a break.  Since July, I have gone on two vacations and also started a full-time job which involved sitting at a desk most of the day.  I also unleashed myself when it came to nutrition.  I enjoyed all my favorite foods on vacation and at home.  I made cupcakes for my boys’ birthdays, I went to parties and reunions and ate like it was my last meal.  I made the decision to relax my normally regimented and disciplined behavior and it felt pretty good.  During this time, I continued training hard.  Even though I gained weight (most likely body fat), I got stronger. I have made many milestones in the last few months of indulgences.  I can snatch the 20kg kettlebell for 100 reps in seven minutes, I can clean & jerk 2 x 24 kg kettlebells for multiple reps, and I can press the 20kg kettlebell for multiple reps.  I’m not sure this has anything to do with my added body weight but regardless, I got stronger and better.  In my opinion, I think my relaxation made have had something to do with it.  I tend to stress about things, and making the decision not to stress made a big difference in how many training sessions have been going.

 So, where am I now?

I am 5’7” and 135lbs which is about 8-10lbs heavier than my normal weight of 125-7ish.  I haven’t had my body fat tested since last December (in the Bod-Pod) at which time it was a little under 12%.  Without a doubt, it is higher now.  I am actually pretty happy with my body at the moment.  The extra weight feels good on me and my husband seems to like it too (haha).

What am I going to do now?

I am going to lose the extra weight.  Even though I am feeling good and looking good (thanks Gary), I have a closet full of clothes that are tailored to fit a woman who weighs less than I currently do and I have no desire to re-stock my closet with new clothes.  So unforuntaly, the weight must go and my Summer of relaxation has to end.  It’s time to get back on track and get my butt in my pants again.

Stay tuned for my plan!

Danyelle Berger Receives RKC Level Two Certification

Danyelle Berger received her Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) level two certification on Sunday July 10th 2011. The RKC Challenge is a brutal three day test of strength, endurance, kettlebell skills and the ability to teach those skills to others. RKC standards are very high often yielding high failure rates among among RKC applicants.

The picture below is what Danyelle’s hands looked like after day one.

Blistered hands during RKC training and certification RKCII
A price to pay being an RKC instructor.

Typical occurrence at RKC certification events. RKC students often have to tape their hands as a result. This is part of RKC training and something that makes RKC so grueling and certification so hard to achieve.

Danyelle Berger has been training and preparing for her level 2 kettlebell certification for about a year. Her hard work and perseverance paid off as she is heading home as a level 2 RKC instructor and able to share her knowledge and new experiences with her students at Baltimore Martial Arts and Fitness.

Female RKCII Candidates in Minneapolis, July 2011

Female RKCII Candidates in Minneapolis, July 2011

This group of ladies were “historic” being the strongest group of ladies that the RKC has ever seen. Amazing feats of strength were accomplished with one woman, Krystal Robens, strict pressing a 32kg kettlebell over her head. Other notable female accomplishments include – Nikki Shlosser 40kg Bent Press Shannon O’Neil 32kg Bent Press & Molly Bird 24kg Bent Press (could easily have done 28). Adrianne Harvey attempted “Iron Maiden” which requires doing a pistol squat, a military press and a pull up with a 24kg kettlebell. Her pistol squat was solid, her press was solid and came within 3 inches of doing her pull up. So close!!!

She and her gravels had to spend the entire three day event performing and demonstrating kettlebell skills. Each day of training can last more than 8 hours and is mostly outdoors in 90 degree weather. She and her class trained for twenty two hours total. Joe Sansalone, center row third from the left, was Danyelle’s original strength and conditioning coach and trainer of kettlebells.

Kettlebell Workout Bergers

Kettlebell Workout

November 12th, 2010

My wife Danyelle & I are now doing our kettlebell workouts together. Today was my second week of training, under Danyelle’s tutelage, as she is the RKC instructor and the one writing our program.

Danyelle has been training consistently with kettlebells for more than two years. My training has been inconsistent over the last 5 months as I’ve been focusing on my new business. I’ve just recently re-begun my training so I’m experiencing a lot of soreness but it’s a good soreness.

Today’s workout kicked my butt. After getting home I was so tired that I took a three hour nap. I don’t remember the last time I had to take a nap from exhaustion.

We did a grueling two hour workout which included cleans and presses, windmills, arm bars, bottoms up, pistol squats, long cycle clean and jerk, bent over rows, squat to press, single leg dead lift, side press, snatches (+5 minute snatch test) and swings.

Beginning next week I’ll post my workout in detail including exercises, sets, reps & ESD (energy system development) specifics. I welcome any criticism from readers as my goals are to get, strong, powerful, move freely, prevent injuries, improve endurance and prepare for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu BJJ Pan American Championships in Brazil in May 2011.

Kettlebell Strength Training

Kettlebell Squat

It is very important to have proper technique when learning to use kettlebells. Improper technique leads to injury, muscular imbalances & problems that may require longer to fix than they took to develop. Kettlebells can not be learned from a book or video. A student of kettlebells must seek out a professional to teach them proper from & give them accurate and proper correction. Don’t be fooled by anyone claiming to teach kettlebells that are not RKC certified.

What is RKC?

CERTIFIED

The prized RKC certificate represents a “Black Belt” in kettlebell instruction that requires extensive pre-training to attain. A grueling, “experience of a lifetime”, the RKC program is the ONLY current program which insists on stringent testing of multiple skills and strengths. Currently only an average of 70% of RKC candidates succeed in passing the requirements by which they can proudly hold themselves forth as “RKC-certified”.

Check out Danyelle’s Instructor Reviews

Those new to kettlebells are encouraged to attend a beginner training class at the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy to become familiar with basic techniques prior to starting classes. Please contact us at 410-465-7799 to schedule your first class.
